Awards night for Vodafone Junior Warriors
Monday 17 September 2012 8:40 PM
Just three days after their season-ending disappointment, the Vodafone Junior Warriors will be back together tomorrow night (Tuesday) for the club’s annual NYC awards dinner being held in the Club Lounge at Mount Smart Stadium.
They’ll be joined by family, friends, sponsors, supporters and Vodafone Warriors management and staff to acknowledge the season’s top achievers, including the naming of the Vodafone NYC Player of the Year and winner of the Sonny Fai Memorial Medal.
Also named will be the DeWalt Clubman of the Year and the TNT Young NYC Player of the Year.
Vodafone Junior Warriors captain John Palavi was awarded the Sonny Fai Medal last year as the Vodafone NYC Player of the Year. He has just finished his fourth and final NYC season with a career tally of 63 appearances, one short of the club record of 64 set by last year’s captain Ben Henry.
The Vodafone Junior Warriors, back-to-back premiers in 2010 and 2011, reached the finals yet again this season, the only club to do so in each of the five years the competition has been running. However, while they finished first equal in the regular season, they lost each of their matches in the finals going down 38-39 to Canberra and 10-26 to the Sydney Roosters last Saturday night.
Tomorrow’s awards dinner will also feature an acknowledgement to departing players.
Previous Vodafone Junior Warriors Player of the Year winners have been Kevin Locke (2008), Elijah Taylor (2009), Nafe Seluini (2010) and Palavi.
Prop Donald Tony, who had his 2012 season ended by a knee injury after just five games, was the DeWalt Clubman of the Year last season while hooker Siliva Havili collected the TNT Young NYC Player of the Year award; Havili is eligible for the Vodafone Junior Warriors again next season.
