The Vodafone Warriors’ first two home games at Eden Park drew club record crowds and tickets are now on sale to the public for their third trip to the country’s biggest stadium, their second-round clash against the Sydney Roosters on Saturday, March 16 next year.
Sales opened on Wednesday morning through www.ticketek.co.nz for an encounter which will be Matthew Elliott’s first home outing as Vodafone Warriors head coach.
In the club’s debut appearance at the venue in 2011 – the first-ever home game played away from Mount Smart Stadium – a record crowd of 38,412 was on hand for the ‘Battle of Eden’.
And this year the second biggest home crowd in the Vodafone Warriors’ history – 37,502 – turned up for the ‘Get Even at Eden’ clash against 2011 grand final winners the Manly Sea Eagles.
Set to line up for the Roosters against the Vodafone Warriors will be the NRL’s biggest off-season signing Sonny Bill Williams, who is familiar with Eden Park as a rugby union player including his involvement there in the All Blacks’ Rugby World Cup triumph against France last year.
The Roosters boast a strong New Zealand flavour in their squad besides Williams. Among the others are Kiwi internationals Jared Waerea-Hargreaves, Frank-Paul Nuuausala and Shaun Kenny-Dowall plus the exciting Roger Tuivasa-Sheck and Tinirau Arona. And 2010-2012 Vodafone Warrior James Maloney is also in line to return to Auckland to take on his former club.
